Data Showa The Spanish Film Industry Grew by 30% in 2023

The Spanish Ministry of Culture’s annual report, Cinematography Statistics: Production, Exhibition, Distribution and Promotion for 2023 (as part of the National Statistics Plan) showed some impressive growth for the Spanish film market.

Per the report, the Spain film industry grew by around 30% in 2023: the total number of viewers recorded a 29.7% year-on-year increase to 76.7 million and total takings amounted to €493 million, 34.2% higher than the previous year.

Furthermore, 3,608 cinemas throughout Spain hosted 728 premieres which marks an increase of around 13.2% from the year prior,  673 Spanish films were screened last year (including 188 feature films) that were seen by a total of 13.4 million viewers which marked a 2.9% growth.

Spanish-produced films raked in €82.4 million for a 6.2% increase while 1,684 foreign films had 63.3 million viewers in 2023 for a 37.4% year-on-year total.

Most impressive is the diversity with films from Spain, as 41.9% were directed or scripted by women, a 5.3% increase from numbers back in 2019.

For the films produced in Spain, there were a total of 375 feature films with 298 of them being national while 77 where done in co-production with other countries.
